Rare and resilient, the Galápagos penguin is the only penguin species to venture into the Northern Hemisphere. Built for chilly seas—not tropical sun—these “Equatorial Explorers” depend on cold upwelling currents that bring fish within reach. However, warming oceans and frequent El Niño events are pushing their prey into deeper, less accessible waters, leading to catastrophic mortality rates of up to 77 percent. With such a small population, their survival is further threatened by entanglement in fishing gear, oil pollution, and invasive predators.
