Bonobos, who share 98.7% of their DNA with humans, are found in the forests south of the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo. These “hippy apes,” live in peaceful, matriarchal communities and act as true gardeners of the jungle, spreading seeds from the fruit they eat and helping the rainforest regenerate. Civil unrest and economic hardship in communities surrounding their habitat have contributed to poaching and deforestation. Although the exact size of the bonobo population is unknown, it has likely been declining for the past 30 years
