The smaller, more elusive cousin of the African Savanna Elephant (and the smallest of the three living elephant species), the African Forest Elephant calls the dense tropical forests of west and central Africa home, and is defined by its oval-shaped ears and downward-facing tusk. These herbivores are often referred to as "the mega-gardeners of the forest" and live in family groups of about 20 elephants, migrating towards water sources during the dry seasons, and back to the lush forests during the rainy season. Unfortunately, factors like deforestation and poaching put them at risk for extinction.
